A good friend introduced Jim to me a few years ago when I purchased a new home in Georgetown. I loved everything he had done for her, so I just knew he would be the perfect choice to help me with my project, which included total renovation of 3 bathrooms, custom built-ins and furnishings throughout. Recently I bought a new home in Arlington after my Georgetown home sold (after only a few days on the market. Of course, with what Jim had done, the place looked amazing). So of course, I needed Jim to help me make my new home a special place. And he did. Larger than our project in Georgetown, this was a total renovation including taking down walls, designing a new open plan kitchen plus four bathrooms and custom built-ins. We repurposed much of the furnishings from Georgetown adding where needed to make my new home a treasure. I absolutely love Jim's work. He listens to his clients to bring their vision to life in the best possible way.

It’s hard to describe what an amazing experience it is to work with J. Michael Design Group. From Jim’s vision to his attention to the tiniest of details, we couldn’t be happier with the results Jim and his team delivered. Jim is truly an artist who listened to our needs and created spaces that we could have never imagined nor done on our own. He offered options, was always respectful of budgets, and because he’s such a nice person, he really made the process fun.
Seeing the finished work almost felt like being on a TV design show – walking into our home and just saying “Wow,” over and over again.

Jim is an incredibly talented and patient designer. He has helped me manage two major renovations in Georgetown and Great Falls. The most recent Great Falls renovation included a complete overhaul of the entire house, finishing an unfinished basement, reconfiguring the kitchen, office, mud room and primary bedroom and bathroom. Jim managed the entire project and was able to fully furnish our home including soft goods, window treatments and art while renovations were underway to be able to accommodate our family for Thanksgiving all during COVID. Not only does he have a great design aesthetic, but he has total accountability and is not personally happy until his clients are happy. His work is impeccable. I cannot think of a designer that would come more highly recommended.

​​Jim helped my husband and me put the finishing touches on our new-construction condo and to arrange and hang artwork. Most of the major furnishings were already in place, but Jim found just the right fabrics and accent pieces that pulled everything together into a comfortable and stylish look that reflects our tastes and 39 years of marriage. Jim can always see the big picture while paying attention to details and is an expert on fabrics and upholstered furniture. He was great fun to work with and respectful of our budget, adding up to a truly positive experience that I would repeat in a heartbeat.

JIM VIVACQUA designer
​J. Michael Design Group opened in 2007 as a consulting service in Product Development and Marketing to the Home Furnishing Trade. Because of his background in Interior Design and Decoration, Jim was getting requests for Decoration services as well, and soon, the business morphed from Marketing to Design.

From full scale renovation to simple one room redecoration, we hope that we can bring Jim's thirty plus years of experiences to create spaces for you that reach (or dare to exceed) your expectations in both form and function.
​​
Our business serves the Washington, DC metro area (Fairfax, Loudoun, Montgomery Counties and the District of Columbia.).
But if there is one thing our experiences through Covid taught us, it's how to work virtually and remotely,
and so we now happily entertain projects outside of our normal trade area.

bio: Originally from upstate New York, Jim studied at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute School of Art with a concentration in painting.
In addition to a certificate in Interior Design, he holds a Bachelors degree from Utica College of Syracuse University and a Graduate Certificate from American University.
​
Prior to opening the J. Michael Design Group, Jim contributed to the success of several high end home furnishings retailers and wholesalers as a designer, merchandiser and manager.
